With an eye on the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann, Chief Ministers of Delhi and Punjab, visited Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram on Saturday, while kickstarting AAP’s campaign in Ahmedabad city.
Both leaders will also be participating in a 2 km-long road show called Tiranga Yatra in eastern Ahmedabad later in the day, as the fledgling party is trying to gain a foothold in the home State of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The two leaders, who arrived in the city late on Friday night, visited the Sabarmati Ashram on Saturday morning and were seen spinning the charkha at Hruday Kunj, the Mahatma’s residence on the Ashram premises on the Sabarmati river bank.
“I feel grateful to have been born in the same country as Gandhiji,” Mr. Kejriwal said, calling the Ashram a “spiritual place.”
His Punjab counterpart said like Gujarat, Punjab was also the land of freedom fighters. “In Punjab also, every other household has a charkha.”
Both leaders did not take any political questions. “Let’s not talk about politics from the Ashram’s land,” they said.
They will be participating in the roadshow in eastern Ahmedabad. On Sunday, both leaders are scheduled to visit Swaminarayan temple before their departure from the city.
