She was cremated with full state honours today at Shivaji Park. And the who's who of Bollywood and politics arrived to attend her last rites and pay her last respects. Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with IndiaToday.in, veteran singer Kavita Krishnamurti condoled her demise.
Going down memory lane, Kavita Krishnamurti recalled her first meeting with the legendary singer. "When I shifted to Bombay in 2005, I met her at an award function. I also happened to meet Asha ji. Mera bachpan se dream tha ki unn sabko dekhu. Aur main jab Mumbai aayi, within a month, meri unse mulakat hogayi. Lata ji se main mili, unke charansparsh kiye aur maine kaha main bhi thoda bohot gaati hu aur unke aashirwad vachan the 'beta khush rahiye aur aise hi accha gaaiye'. Industry mein Lata ji ka aashirwad mil gaya aur usse zyada kya chahiye? Bas unka aashirwad chal raha hai," said Kavita.
[Loose translation - It was my childhood dream to meet them. And when I came to Mumbai, within a month,I met both of them. When I met Lata ji, I did charansparsh and I told her that I also sing. And she blessed me and said stay happy and keep singing well. What else does one want apart from her blessings?]
The melodious singer added that she couldn't stop crying when she learnt about the legendary singer's death. "Aur aaj lag toh raha unki tabiyat kharab chal rahi thi. Subah jab suna maine [about her death] , main room mein jaake itna royi hu aaj aur bilkul accha nahi lag raha. Itna bada loss hai industry ke liye."
[I knew that she wasn't doing well. But this morning when I heard about her demise, I couldn't stop crying. I was not feeling good at all. It is a big loss to the industry.]
Kavita Krishnamurti further listed her favourite Lata Mangeshkar's songs. The list included songs like Mere saaya saath chalega, Rahe na rahe hum, Naam gum jaayega chehra ye badal jaayega and Meri aawaz hi meri pehchaan hain. She went on to add that she loved Lata Mangeshkar and Madan Mohan's combination.
"Hafte mein 3-4 baar vahi [songs] raatko laga karke sunti hoon. Ye toh sakshat Saraswati maa India mein paida huyi aur unki kadar aanewali generations ko samaj aayegi. Humne unko dekh liya. Mujhe lagta hai aisa artist 1000 years mein paida hota hain aur vo unme se ek thi. We are blessed ki hum unke darshan sakshat kar paye. Vo sakshat Saraswati maa hain. Maine kayi singers se suna hai ke vo kabhi besuri hui hi nahi. Vo sunkar main ishwar se kehti thi ki mujhe sacha soor de. Main yehi dua karti hu ki unki tarah mera soor correct lage. Vo itna badi personality thi par vo itni grounded thi," added Krishnamurti.
