Kathy Giusti: Warp Speed to cancer cures – COVID vaccine should be our model to save more lives

If the speed of COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution has taught us anything, it’s that when government funds not just the discovery, but application and commercialization of life-saving medical treatment, it can de-risk the private sector in ways that will drive quick action. 

If we’re going to solve the cancer crisis, not just on an individual basis, but on a global scale, we need to treat it with the same urgency and resolve we treated COVID-19.   To "end cancer as we know it," we need to use Warp Speed as a template. And there’s no reason why we shouldn’t. Cancer is a pandemic too, even if it isn’t infectious. Last year, it killed nearly 10 million people, more than three times as many people as the coronavirus. And it will again this year and next year and the year after that – unless we do something big.
