BJP government in Karnataka has decided to name Shivamogga airport after former CM BS Yediyurappa.
Karnataka government on Wednesday decided to name Shivamogga airport after former chief minister and senior BJP leader BS Yediyurappa.
Speaking to media, Chief Minister Bommai said the cabinet has decided to name Shivamogga airport after BSY as he played a major role in bringing the airport to the city. The proposal will now be forwarded to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Several seers and former minister Eshwarappa had publicly demanded the airport be named after the Lingayath leader.

However, Karnataka Congress in 2021 demanded that the construction of Shivamogga airport terminal be stopped. It had objected to the lotus-shaped design of the airport.
BJP was quick to defend its decision. It said lotus was a national flower and had nothing to do with the BJP’s election symbol.
Shivamogga airport is being constructed at Sogane on the outskirts of the city. The cost of airport construction is pegged at Rs 384 crore. The construction of airport’s 1.7 km long runway has already been completed.
