Join us for Shoomis: A Celebration of Grandfather Teachings for National Indigenous Peoples Day
CBC
To celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, CBC Thunder Bay is producing a morning of special coverage broadcasting right across northwestern Ontario.
Join co-hosts Sara Kae and Jasmine Kabatay from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. local time on CBC Radio One, CBC Listen and the CBC News App for Shoomis: A Celebration of Grandfather Teachings.
They'll be broadcasting from the shores of Gichigami, also known as Lake Superior, on Robinson-Superior Treaty land in Thunder Bay. Follow this link to listen to our special programming live on CBC Listen.
Shoomis means grandfather in Anishinaabemowin and the Seven Grandfather teachings are a set of guiding principles passed down from generation to generation to guide Anishinaabe to live a good life.
We'll share stories of resiliency, courage and love, and they all centre on the Seven Grandfather teachings, with elder Wanda Baxter to help us learn what the teachings mean.
We'll hear from language keeper Charlotte Marten, who is using puppets to teach Anishinaabemowin to children, demonstrating the value of humility. We'll also meet Kim Wheeler, the producer of the Words and Culture podcast, with author Waubgeshig Rice, and CBC's Tessa Harper will take us to a two-spirit powwow in Thunder Bay.
Plus, we'll have some great tunes from Indigenous artists across Canada.
It will be a great morning of radio, and we welcome you to share it with us.
