The incident took place on a stretch of the NH-33 near Kuju in Ramgarh district, when a truck on its way to Hazaribagh turned turtle after striking a diversion. Tons of fish came splattering down on the highway and as word of the mishap spread, more and more villagers gathered at the scene.
Seeing the fresh seafood free for the taking, a frenzy began with their bare hands, villagers gathered the fish, stuffed them into gunny sacks before running away with their loot.
Cars traveling on the highway also came to a halt at the curious sight; many drivers got off to take their pick of the fishes strewn on the road. They put their catch in their vehicles and drove off.

Not only villagers and passers-by, but police personnel called to the scene of the accident were seen picking up and making off with kilos of fish scattered on the road.
Asked about people and police alike looting the fish, Kuju SI Shahnawaz Khan, who was present at the spot, said they were doing everything possible to save as many fishes as possible.
