Two Jewish organizations say they are outraged after a kosher restaurant business was broken into at two locations in separate incidents in the Greater Toronto Area in the past few days.
According to The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies and the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, the Jewish-owned business of La Briut was targeted in both break-ins. The office of La Briut in the area of Yonge Street and Doncaster Avenue in Markham was broken into, vandalized and sprayed with anti-Semitic graffiti on Friday, while its restaurant in Toronto on Alness Street, near Dufferin Street and Steeles Avenue West, was broken into Sunday, its front door shattered and money stolen, the organizations said in news releases.
York Regional Police said members of its hate crime prevention unit are seeking two suspects in the Friday break-in, while Toronto police are investigating the Sunday incident.
Neither police service has named the business, but Toronto police have confirmed the break-in on Alness Street is related to the one in Markham.
In a news release on Monday, York police said two people broke into a commercial unit at about 2:40 a.m. on Friday. Police said the pair vandalized the property, causing significant damage, and left antisemitic graffiti on the property.
Police have released images of the suspects.
"York Regional Police takes these matters seriously and is reminding the community we will not tolerate any form of hate crime," police said in the release.
"All reports of hate crime or hate/bias incidents will be investigated thoroughly," they continued, adding anyone who has witnessed or been a victim of a hate-related incident is encouraged to report it immediately.
In an email on Monday, Toronto police spokesperson Const. Cindy Chung said the investigation into the break-in on Alness Street is ongoing.
"Property was damaged and cash was stolen. There were no signs of graffiti or antisemitic messaging at the incident in Toronto," Chung said.
