Newbury: Jassim bin Ali Al Attiyah’s Gubbass (IRE) (Mehmas x Vida Amorosa) remained unbeaten in two starts, winning the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes, a Class 2 five-furlong race for two-year-old, at Newbury on Saturday.
Starting from gate 15 in the 22-runner field, the bay colt took closer order down the centre of thetrack as the field was divided into two parts. As they entered the final two furlongs, Gubbass answered all of Sean Levey’s urgings to hold off stablemate Symphony Perfect (IRE) (Fast Company x Irish Romance), who was ridden by Ben Curtis, for a half-length score. The Tom Dascombe-trained and Jane Elliott-ridden Delmona (IRE) (Dandy Man x Imelda Mayhem) was a further head behind in third. Gubbass is trained by Richard Hannon, who told Racing TV: “It’s sort of by accident that he’s had the 99-day layoff. We looked at taking him to Royal Ascot and he wasn’t quite himself. He’s grown. He’s certainly a very good horse and it didn’t surprise me that he won. Sean has always loved him. He rides him every day and he says he’s a very good horse.”More Related News
