Israel expands ground offensive in Lebanon

Israel will “continue to fight,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks.
• Israel is expanding its ground incursion in southern Lebanon as it escalates its war against Hezbollah. Explosions tore through the skies overnight in Beirut, where nightly Israeli strikes have targeted the southern suburbs. Video showed Israeli forces hoisting a flag on the outskirts of a Lebanese border village, and Israel’s prime minister said his country has “eliminated” the successor to the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. • Meanwhile, sites in Israel have continued to come under rocket fire from Lebanon, in strikes claimed by Hezbollah. The Israeli military said Tuesday that more than 100 rockets had been fired at Israel in one hour, as the northern city of Haifa and Galilee were struck. • Hezbollah has publicly supported efforts by Lebanon’s parliament speaker to achieve a ceasefire with Israel for the first time since the war started. The militant group previously said it would only stop firing at Israel once a ceasefire is reached with Hamas in Gaza. • In Gaza, an Israeli strike on a home in the Al Bureij refugee camp killed at least 30 Palestinians on Monday, according to officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Further north, Palestinians fleeing the renewed hostilities say they are being shot at by the Israeli military as they evacuate. • Here’s how to help civilians impacted by the war in Gaza. More than 1,000 American citizens, legal permanent residents, and family members have departed from Lebanon on US-government organized flights, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Tuesday.
