IPL 2022: Former pacer Ajit Agarkar feels that Virat Kohli taking over as RCB captain again will help the franchise avoid spending big on a captaincy candidate at the auction, scheduled for February 12 and 13.
Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar said he believes Virat Kohli taking over captaincy again will make things easier for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Kohli quit as RCB captain after IPL 2021, citing the need to stay fresh ahead. He announced his decision ahead of the 2nd leg of the IPL in the UAE.
Kohli had taken over the captaincy of RCB from former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori in 2013. The 32-year-old has led the team in 131 games - 60 wins, 64 losses but he was not able to lift the IPL trophy despite reaching the final in 2016.
Royal Challengers Bangalore, however, retained Virat Kohli for Rs 15 crore ahead of the mega auction, scheduled for February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. RCB also secured the services of Glenn Maxwell for Rs 11 crore and Mohammed Siraj for Rs 7 crore.
However, the former finalists are yet to announce their captain even as Maxwell remains the front runner for the role. It i likely that RCB might go for a captaincy candidate at the IPL 2022 Auction but Agarakar said the franchise need not spend big money on a player if Kohli agrees to lead the side again.
"If Virat Kohli can take over the captaincy and if he is happy to do it and if he has the energy to do it, I think that will be the easiest solution for them," Agarkar told Star Sports show Game Plan ahead of the auction.
"At the end of the day, we have seen RCB over the years they haven't invested enough money in making a proper team of 12, 13 or 14 players with enough depth
"It's always been dependent on the top three, not enough middle order players and if you don't have the money, you can't do that again.
