India Today
IPL 2022: Led by KL Rahul, Lucknow Super Giants are heading into their maiden season with a well-rounded squad. The presence of former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir as mentor will be a big boost to the RP Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise.
Lucknow Super Giants are one of the two new teams who will be part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Owned by the RP Sanjiv Goenka group, the Super Giants will be led by KL Rahul, who made the move away from Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
The RP Sanjiv Goenka group had an IPL team in Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017. The team was led by MS Dhoni and then by Steve Smith and they also reached the final of the 2017 season. The experience of already having owned an IPL franchise showed in the way the Lucknow franchise operated in the auction and made their support staff appointments.
The Lucknow Super Giants had drafted in KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi ahead of the mega auction. During the auction in Bengaluru in February, the Lucknow franchise were one of the finest performers, assembling a squad that looks good to challenge for the title.
Lucknow had their mentor Gautam Gambhir at the auction table along with head coach Andy Flower. Former Delhi Capitals support staff member Vijay Dahiya will be their assistant coach. They also roped in former Australia fast bowler Andy Bichel as their bowling coach.
WELL-ROUNDED SQUAD
In KL Rahul and wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, the Lucknow side has a powerful opening combination at the top. They have also got West Indies big-hitter Evin Lewis as a possible backup option.
In Manish Pandey, Lucknow have a reliable and experienced top-order batter who will be looking for a new lease of life in his IPL career.
