IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis was on a six-hitting spree in his first match as RCB captain as the former CSK opener hit 88 from just 57 balls, overcoming a slow start against Punjab Kings on Sunday at the DY Patil Stadium.
Faf du Plessis showed his class in his first game for Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday in Mumbai. The newly-appointed RCB captain overcame a slow start to tear into the Punjab Kings bowling unit, hitting his maiden hundred in the history of the IPL.
Faf du Plessis was batting on 23 from 34 balls as lack of competitive action showed in the way the South Africa batter struggled for timing. Despite a 50-run opening stand with young Anuj Rawat, RCB were not moving the scoreboard at a brisk pace, getting to 79 in only 10 overs.
However, Faf du Plessis broke the shackles in the 13th over, bowled by West Indies pacer Odean Smith as the RCB skipper tonked the fast bowler for 2 sixes and a boundary. There was no looking back from there on as the South Africa star hit 7 sixes and 3 boundaries and ran hard between the wickets in his 118-run stand with Virat Kohli.
Faf du Plessis fell just 12 runs short of his maiden IPL hundred, but the RCB captain had done the job with 88 in just 57 balls, getting his last 65 runs in just 23 balls. Du Plessis went on a six-hitting spree as he treated the PBKS pacers and spinners with disdain.
Only a stunning catch in the 18th over from Shahrukh Khan helped stop the du Plessis blitz as Arshdeep Singh picked up the big wicket.
Chennai Super Kings fans were distraught seeing their former opener continue his run-scoring ways in the IPL, this time for a new franchise - RCB, who are also their rivals in the cash-rich T20 league.
