IPL 2022: Shreyas Iyer, who was bought by KKR for Rs 12.5 crore at the mega auction, will lead the 2-time champions. The star batter said he is looking forward to help build on the legacy the side has been able to achieve so far.
After having worked with Rcky Ponting at Delhi Capitals, Shreyas Iyer said he is looking forward to working with Brendon McCullum at Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, calling him an 'aggressive coach'.
Shreyas Iyer was appointed as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2022. He was bought by the 2-time champions for Rs 12.5 crore as they spent big at the mega auction on Iyer after releasing Eoin Morgan who led them to the final last season.
Iyer, who had led Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final in 2020, was not retained by Delhi ahead of the mega auction. Iyer had a fine working relationship with Ponting as the duo successfully transformed the Delhi side which has reached the play-offs in two successive years.
Having had success as a captain in the IPL, Iyer said he is looking forward to build on the legacy of KKR which won the title in 2012 and 2014 under Gautam Gambhir's captaincy.
"You know, for me to be part of the KKR family is an enormous feeling. I want to really appreciate the work which has been done by all the great players in the past and I would like to follow the same footsteps, which they have created for KKR," Iyer said in an interview with the franchise.
"Brendon McCullum as a coach I feel is very aggressive. Even when you saw him playing for his country (New Zealand), he was someone who was very aggressive and he is kind of a risk-taker.
"And I absolutely love that. Obviously, I've had few interactions with him after the auction. He's got that calm demeanour and I'm really looking forward to working with him, and to have some very successful seasons for KKR over the years."
