The Forest department rescued a five-year-old leopard trapped in a snare on private land at Kakkayangad in Muzhakkunnu panchayat, Kannur, on Monday morning. The animal was discovered injured at 8:30 a.m. on the property of B.K. Prakashan.
A large crowd gathered at the site following the discovery of the trapped leopard, prompting swift action by police and forest officials, who cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. Kannur Divisional Forest Officer Vysak Sasikumar stated that a specialised four-member team, led by forest veterinarian Ajesh Mohandas from Wayanad, was deployed for chemical immobilisation and capture of the leopard.
The animal was transported to the Rapid Response Team hospital in Aralam, where it is under observation. “The injuries will be assessed before determining the next steps,” said Mr Sasikumar.
Kannur District Collector Arun K. Vijayan imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163(1) of the Kerala BNSS Act, banning public gatherings in Muzhakkunnu panchayat limits from 10 a.m. on January 6 to 5 p.m. on January 7. The Collector, who is also the District Magistrate, warned of strict disciplinary action against violations.
The restrictions were enforced following a report from the Iritty tahsildar, highlighting the public safety risk posed by the leopard’s presence.
