
Indian Railways’ revenue remains off track for 2nd straight financial year

The revenue generated by the Indian Railways remains weak for the second consecutive year due to lower passenger ticket sales and higher expenditure towards maintaining Covid-19 safety guidelines.
Revenue generated by the Indian Railways remained weak for the second consecutive year due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the passenger ticket sales segment, the railways lost revenue worth Rs 35,421 crore in 2020-21, compared to 2019-20.
After eight months of FY22, the revenue remained Rs 10,000 crore short of the halfway mark in comparison to the pre-pandemic financial year. Reduced train travel and social distancing norms have impacted other income avenues of the railways as well.
