In an exclusive interview with India Today, VHP leader Prem Sharma said that a Hindu idol and the Indian flag were damaged during the clash in Jahangirpuri on Saturday.
Local Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Prem Sharma was arrested on Monday for allegedly organising the Hanuman Jayanti procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Saturday without requisite permission. He was later released on bail.
Nine people were injured after communal clashes had broken out in Jahangirpuri during the procession on Saturday evening.
On Tuesday, in an exclusive interview with India Today, VHP leader Prem Sharma said that permission had been obtained from the police to organise the shobha yatra on Saturday. Additionally, he alleged that a Hindu idol and the Indian flag were damaged during the clash.
Prem Sharma said, “We had taken permission from two police stations, Mahendra Park and Jahangirpuri. This procession is carried out every year without problem. We had told the police that more than 400 people would be present and there would be a music system. We even informed them of the route.”
“If we had not told the police in advance, how were 15-20 cops and their vehicles stationed with us? We told the police everything,” he added.
He said they submitted a letter and got it signed by the police.
