India vs West Indies: Rohit Sharma said India are delighted to have someone like Ravi Bishnoi who has quite a few variations up his sleeve. The wrist-spinner, on his T20I debut, picked up 2/17 as he set up India's 6-wicket win in the 1st T20I on Wedneday.
India captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday heaped praise on 21-year-old Ravi Bishnoi, who shone on his T20I debut in the series opener against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Bishnoi picked up 2 wickets and gave away just 17 runs as India were able to restrict the West Indies to just 157 in 20 overs before sealing a 6-wicket win to go 1-0 up in the 3-match series.
Speaking after leading India to their 4th successive win in the T20I format since taking over as the full-time captain, Rohit said India are certainly seeing something different in Bishnoi, who bowled more googlies than leg-breaks in the first T20I.
India vs West Indies, 1st T20I: Highlights
India went ahead and picked up two wrist-spinners, knowing Bishnoi's ability to bowl the wrong'uns consistently. The move worked as the two leg-spinners hurt West Indies in the middle overs, picking up 3 crucial wickets. Bishnoi was impressive on his debut as he picked up 2 wickets in his 4-over spell, conceding just 17 runs.
Bishnoi was part of the ODI squad as well but Rohit said the team wanted to straightaway draft him in the T20I XI, adding that the young leg-spinner has a bright future ahead of him. It was no surprise when the Lucknow Super Giants drafted Bishnoi ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction as the spinner continues to prove his mettle at the highest level.
"Bishnoi is a very talented guy which is why we drafted him into the squad straight away. We see something different in him. He's got lot of variations and skill-set with him," Rohit said after India's 6-wicket win.
"He can bowl at any stage and it gives us a lot of options to rotate the other bowlers. Very happy with his first game for India and he's got a bright future and it's just about us now on how we use him."
