Wang Yi's visit to India was the first one by a high-level Chinese official since the Galwan valley clash in June 2020 and the subsequent border standoff in eastern Ladakh. The talks came amid outrage over his remarks on Jammu and Kashmir at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers’ meeting in Islamabad on March 22. Wang Yi had said, “On the Kashmir issue, we have once again heard the call of many Islamic friends. China shares the same aspiration.”
Top sources said the need to take forward early and complete disengagement in the remaining border areas was discussed at length at the meeting. Doval and Yi also deliberated on ways to remove impediments to allow the bilateral relationship to improve.

“Both agreed that continuation of the present situation is not in mutual interest. Restoration of peace and tranquillity will help build mutual trust and create an enabling environment for progress in relations,” a source said.
The duo also stressed the need to continue positive interactions at diplomatic and military levels for restoration of peace and tranquillity, which is a prerequisite for normalisation. They agreed that both countries must ensure that their actions do not violate the spirit of equality and mutual security.
