Schools associations have accused the Karnataka government of corruption in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Registered Unaided Private Schools Management Association has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the Karnataka government led by CM Basavaraj Bommai of rampant corruption.
The associations urged PM Modi to look into alleged bribes that are being demanded by the state education department to issue recognition certificates to educational institutions. The body highlighted corruption while issuing no-objection certificates (NOC), renewal of recognition and other processes involving the department.
"Due to rampant corruption activities by the officials of primary and higher secondary education departments, private schools in Karnataka are at the verge of closure," the letter said.

According to the associations, building and fire safety compliance is mandatory and private schools have to spend lakhs to obtain these documents, resulting in a rampant increase in corruption at various levels. The associations claimed that multiple complaints and pleas to state Education Minister BC Nagesh have gone unattended.
"The department has started a new method. A three-member committee visits schools in the guise of verification. If not bribed, the committee will find some lacunae and harass the school authorities," the letter stated, blaming the education minister.
