During the inaugural edition of the IPL, S Sreesanth was slapped by Harbhajan Singh. Subsequently, Harbhajan was banned from the remainder of the tournament as well as handed a five-match ODI ban by the BCCI.
Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh touched upon one of the biggest controversies in the history of the Indian Premier League. The retired off-spinner admitted that he made a mistake, while referring to the infamous slapgate incident.
In the inaugural edition of the IPL, then Kings XI Punjab bowler S Sreesanth was slapped by then Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan at Mohali. The incident, wherein Sreesanth was seen crying, was caught by the TV cameras before the presentation ceremony.
"What happened was wrong. I made a mistake. Because of me, my teammate had to face embarrassment. I was embarrassed," Harbhajan said at Glance LIVE Fest.
"If I had to correct one mistake, it was how I treated Sreesanth on the field. It should not have had happened. When I think about it, I feel there was no need.
Although Sreesanth had downplayed the incident, calling Harbhajan like his elder brother, the spinner was banned from the remainder of the tournament and prohibited from collecting his salary after being found guilty.
Moreover, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched a separate investigation and banned Harbhajan for five ODIs.
