Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said that if banning alcohol could deter people, he would do it within a day.
Amid the ongoing political debate in Madhya Pradesh over the new liquor policy, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that if banning alcohol could deter people, the state government would do so within a day.
Addressing the public in Ujjain, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, "Alcohol is the root of destruction".
"If banning alcohol would have deterred people, I would have done so right away, but that is not the case. As a result, we will begin by creating a drug-free society. We will concentrate on a de-addiction campaign, and as people stop using the drug, the shops will automatically shut down," he added.
Chouhan's remarks come after senior BJP leader and former union minister Uma Bharti slammed the state government's new liquor policy.
Bharti, who called for alcohol prohibition, accused the BJP government of "playing with the lives and honour" of people by serving them liquor.
“Today we have implemented a new liquor policy in Madhya Pradesh. The new rules aim to ensure more alcohol is available to people and more liquor is served at liquor shops. The rules are being opposed by the women of the state,” Uma Bharti said in a series of tweets on Friday.
“I am with the women and daughters of Madhya Pradesh. I am also concerned for the sons who have become victims of alcohol abuse. I am ashamed that we are earning revenue by playing on their honor and life,” she added.
