Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday expressed solidarity with Sri Lanka as the island nation plunged into serious trouble when fresh protests erupted in the capital city over economic collapse. Angry protesters broke into the presidential palace and forced President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee. He is expected to resign on July 13.
As the condition in the neighbouring country deteriorates, Sonia Gandhi on Sunday issued a statement saying the Congress has been following with concern the evolving political situation in Sri Lanka.
"The economic challenges, rising prices, and shortages of food, fuel, and essential commodities have caused enormous hardships and distress among the people there," she said.
