Pro-Hindu groups, including the Hindu Munnani, called for a day-long hartal in Puducherry over DMK leader A Raja’s hate comments on Santana Dharma. Shops were shut in the Union Territory and government buses were plying under police protection.
Condemning Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader A Raja’s speech, pro-Hindu groups called for a day-long hartal in Puducherry. The hartal, organised by five pro-Hindu groups including the Hindu Munnani, resulted in a complete shutdown of shops.
Private buses and tempos are not plying in the city, but a few government buses are helping commuters move around the city with police personnel providing security.
Police officials are also stationed at important points across the city to prevent untoward incidents.
Meanwhile, miscreants pelted stones at Tamil Nadu government buses near Villiyanallur in the Nagapattinam district. Hindu Munnani had earlier called for a bandh due to which several shops were shut in the Mettupalayam, Ooty and Sathyamangalam areas.
At least 18 Hindu Munnani members were also detained. The entire issue began when A Raja’s remarks on Shudras and Manusmrithi outraged members of pro-Hindu groups in the state.
While speaking at an event earlier this month, Raja slammed Governor RN Ravi and stated that only upper-class Hindus speak in favour of Sanatan Dharma. He further claimed it was based on Manusmriti, which calls backwards-class Hindus Shudras.
DMK leader A Raja’s alleged hate speech on Sanatana Dharma has triggered multiple instances of violence across Tamil Nadu. It also resulted in massive outrage from BJP members and pro-Hindu groups.
