The Karnataka HC has ruled that wearing hijabs does not form part of the essential religious practice in Islam. The three-judge bench issued the verdict on Tuesday, March 15. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abduallah, has termed the verdict ‘very disappointing’.
Reacting to the Karnataka verdict, Minority Affairs minister, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “Hijab ke mudde par jo horror aur hungama tha veh tai tai phiss time ho gaya [all the horror and ruckus over the hijab row has fallen straight on its face]”.

The hijab controversy first came to the public’s attention on January 1, when some Muslim students of a pre-university college in Karnataka’s Udupi were not allowed to attend classes wearing a hijab, as the dress was against the prescribed norms of the college.
The protests soon spread to other colleges and districts. After petitions were filed by protesting Muslim students, the Karnataka HC began hearing the issue.
After multiple sessions, the Karnataka HC, on Tuesday, March 15, ruled that wearing hijabs does not form part of the essential religious practice in Islam. It further said that the restrictions on wearing uniforms was reasonable and that students cannot object to it.
