Highway 403 reopens in Brantford after part of bridge falls onto the road

Highway 403 in Brantford has reopened Tuesday morning after a piece of the Wayne Gretzky Parkway fell on the road.
Provincial police tweeted around 6 a.m. that lanes in both directions between Highway 24 and Garden Avenue were clear.
Ministry of Transportation's Senior Issues Advisor Lee Alderson said Monday, that a commercial vehicle "hit an overpass and a girder protecting the bridge was dislodged and fell on the highway below."
The closure caused delays throughout the area as drivers were forced to take detours throughout the afternoon.
Alderson added it's not the first time the bridge has been hit.
The overpass was struck in December and again in January by "oversized loads being" transported along the highway, he wrote in an email to CBC.
"[This caused] damage to the bridge which necessitated closure of one lane on Wayne Gretzky Parkway until necessary repairs can be completed," Alderson said. "These repairs are currently being tendered."
Brantford police said the Wayne Gretzky Parkway southbound lanes have also reopened.
Northbound road is reduced to one lane, and the ramp on Wayne Gretzky Parkway to head west on Highway 403 is still closed, according to the service.
