Highway 17 reopened after fatal head-on crash in Espanola area

A 78-year-old resident from White River has died in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 17 in the Espanola area shortly after midnight Friday.

Emergency crews were called to the scene in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release. 

"Upon arrival, police learned of a head on collision involving a vehicle and commercial motor vehicle," OPP said.

One person was pronounced deceased at the scene while no other injuries were reported.

"The highway was closed for approximately 9 hours, which has now been reopened," OPP said around 10 a.m.
