Students who spent Friday and Monday learning remotely will be back in class Tuesday morning, say local school boards.
On Monday afternoon, the Waterloo Catholic, Wellington Catholic, Upper Grand and CSC MonAvenir schools all said they would be ready to welcome students back to in-person learning the following day, now that the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) staff members are returning to work.
The union, which represents thousands of Ontario education workers, said it has Premier Doug Ford's commitment to repeal Bill 28 in writing. The legislation, which was passed last week, would have enforced a contract on workers and made it illegal for them to strike.
The government said it was willing to revoke Bill 28 because CUPE had agreed to take the threat of strike off the table and return to the bargaining table.
The school board said Monday all its schools, including St. Louis, will be open as usual on Tuesday. Extended day programs will be back up and running, as will school buses and taxis.
"We thank you for your patience and understanding as we transitioned into remote learning," wrote the school board in a message to parents. "We pray that both sides will quickly reach a fair and just collective agreement that serves the interests of all."
The board had planned to shift to remote learning on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the agreement between CUPE and the Ontario government means all students will continue to learn in-person this week.
CUPE workers in this board do custodial and maintenance work and run the boards English as a second language (ESL) programs for students and adults.
The board said all ESL classes in the board's continuing education program will resume Nov. 8 and community use of schools will resume on Nov. 9.
The school board said in-person learning will resume on Tuesday, as will before and after programs. It said extracurricular activities and community use of school permits will resume as well.
"We are looking forward to having our custodians and maintenance staff back with us at work tomorrow and we are grateful for their work in our schools each day," said the school board in a notice online.
The school board said that since CUPE had announced its members will be back at work Tuesday morning, its schools across south-central Ontario would reopen.
