
Heavy rainfall warning for Kerala, Karnataka, over 1,000 villages in UP inundated | Top points

The India Meterological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Around 2.4 lakh people in over 1,000 villages in 22 districts of UP are inundated.
Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and normal life has come to a standstill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD)has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alapuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod.
Coastal districts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep may also get heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Incessant rains battered Kerala on Wednesday, leading to a rise in water levels in various rivers, prompting authorities to open shutters of Malampuzha dam in Palakkad district to discharge excess water in the reservoir, news agency PTI reported.
The weather agency has predicted rain or thundershower at most places in Kerala and Lakshadweep till September 3 due to the cyclonic circulation over interior Tamil Nadu and in in the neighbourhoods of west Vidarbha across Telangana and Rayalaseema.
The weatherman has sounded yellow alerts in all 14 districts, predicting rain in most places in the southern state. People living in low-lying areas in central Kerala district were evacuated to safer places owing to torrential rainfall in the state. Schools were closed in Pathanamthitta district administration as they were converted into relief camps to provide shelter for people.
Authorities have sounded alert to people living on the banks of river Bharathapuzha as the shutters of Malampuzha dam will be opened to release excess water in the reservoir.
