Thunderstorms with heavy rain started around 1:30 p.m. across the city and suburbs on Monday. There was a constant drizzle until late into the night.
The maximum temperature recorded, 34 degree celsius, dropped to 24 degree celsius, according to the Meteorological Department. A total of 63.10 mm of rainfall was recorded in Madurai district till Monday. Heavy showers of 17.60 mm in Mettupatti, 17.80 mm in Madurai Airport, 6 mm in Tallakulam, 21.70 mm in Madurai North.
Commuters, especially office-goers and school, college goers faced difficulties travelling through the inundated areas of K.K.Nagar, Thangaraj Salai, Tallakulam, Goripalayam, Anna Nagar, Kuruvikaran Salai, Kamaraj Salai, Munichalai, Keezha Vasal, Vilakkuthoon, South Gate, Simmakkal, Girder bridge.
No emergency calls were received, said the official at the fire brigade.
Due to the heavy spells, the processions of Lord Sundareswarar with Goddesses Piriyavidai and Meenakshi around the four Masi streets in view of Chithirai festival were cancelled. The eager devotees who gathered in large numbers returned home without having a glimpse of the deities.
The temperature which was hovering around 36 degree celsius in the beginning of last week dropped to an average of 33 degree celsius after the long spells since April 9.
