Heavy rain, flooding closes stretch of Highway 402

Flooding in the wake of record-breaking rainfall put a stretch of Highway 402 near Watford, Ont., underwater Tuesday.
Water cascading over the highway prompted provincial police to close the eastbound lanes at Nauvoo Road, and its westbound lanes at Kerwood Road.
"Flooding can obscure the road surface, making it difficult to see potholes and debris," said OPP Const. Jeanine Robertson in an emailed statement. "The highway is closed as two feet of rushing water was covering the roadway."
Police are asking motorists to avoid driving on the closed sections of road.
"The safest course of action is to find an alternate route," Roberston said.
It's unclear how long the highway will be closed, but police said they will update the public when it reopens.
