A portion of the main road linking Assam’s Margherita town and Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang town caved in on Tuesday after heavy rainfall. Vehicles were left stranded at both ends of the road after the road washed away.
Earlier in the morning, a stretch of the road near the Rangfrah Shiv Mandir in Arunachal Pradesh developed cracks. However, before the Changlang district administration could find any solution, the fragile stretch was washed away by afternoon, leaving a yawning gap in the road.
The Changlang deputy commissioner, Sunny K Singh immediately issued a prohibitory order to restrict the movement of vehicles till the road is completely restored. He also directed the executive engineer at the Public Work Department (PWD) Changlang division to “make every possible effort for fast restoration of the road.”
While the district administration attributed heavy rainfall and a pre-existing sinking zone as the main cause of the landslide, some locals cited mining related deforestation as one of the primary reasons for the destruction.
