The weathermen have predicted light rain or thunderstorm with gusty winds up to 30-40 kmph in the three coastal districts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada over the next two days while the rest of Karnataka can expect light rain with gusty winds with speeds up to 50 kmph.
Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds lashed Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, in coastal Karnataka, in the morning on April 11.
While parts of Udupi district received heavy rains from very early in the morning, Mangaluru and surrounding areas were affected by rains late in the morning.
The rains that lasted for more than one hour brought down the soaring temperatures, thereby offering reprieve to people from the summer heat.
People and students, who had left home early in the morning, were caught unawares by the downpour. While those riding two-wheelers took refuge in bus shelters and other buildings, those travelling by bus faced difficulties, as both categories of travellers were not prepared for the rains.
Though the rains abated around 9 a.m., clouds hovered overhead throughout the day.
Roads in localities in Mangaluru prone to inundation, including Kottara, Kottara Chowki and surrounding areas, were badly affected. A tree branch fell on Mahatma Gandhi Road near Lal Bagh, and was subsequently cleared.
