The Supreme Court refused to extend the interim bail granted to Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi, formerly known as Wasim Rizvi, in connection with the hate speech case. The court has asked Jitendra Tyagi to surrender before September 5.
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to extend the medical bail granted to Jitendra Tyagi alias Wasim Rizvi in a case pertaining to alleged hate speech at Haridwar Dharam Sansad. The court directed Wasim Rizvi to surrender by Friday.
A bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice BV Nagarathna was considering Tyagi’s plea challenging Uttarakhand High Court’s March order denying him bail. The court had in May granted him interim bail on medical grounds for three months.
On Monday, senior advocate Sidharth Luthra appearing for Tyagi argued in favour of extension of his medical bail. He took the court through all the cases registered against him with the same allegations and questioned if the same could be done.
Luthra pointed out that all the cases registered against him are either disposed of or he hasn’t been chargesheeted. He further argued that in the second FIR filed against Tyagi, while he was arrested, the others were released on bail.

"We can’t keep track of cases against you," the bench remarked. Luthra submitted that the trend now is that any episode with electronic broadcast leads to multiple FIRs across India.
'Your client has to keep a private secretary to keep track of how many cases are pending against him," Justice Rastogi remarked in a lighter vein.
