A handgun, in a beyond-repair state, was found in a dustbin near Madurai Central Jail on Tuesday morning, August 2. The handgun was found by sanitation workers who were engaged in the task of removing garbage from a garbage bin located near the gate of Madurai Central Jail.

The sanitation workers were shocked to see a gun inside a plastic bag. The Madurai Central jail officials and police officials at Karimedu police station were informed about the discovery.

Police officials who reached the spot began investigating and identified the handgun as a small portable airgun.

According to the police, the airgun is damaged beyond repair. The police suspect that the owner might have dumped the gun in the waste bin due to its condition. A search is on for the owner of the gun.

Officials said that an investigation is also on, probing other possible angles.
