A Hamilton MP has once again been appointed to a federal Liberal cabinet post, this time as minister of public services and procurement.
Filomena Tassi, who represents Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas, was sworn in Tuesday to her third cabinet role since her 2015 election. She'll start the job when cabinet resumes on Nov. 22.
Tassi's was among the 38 cabinet posts Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today. Burlington MP Karina Gould, former minister of democratic institutions, was named minister of families, children and social development.
Tassi is the only experienced MP of the three Liberals Hamilton sent to Ottawa in September. Hamilton East-Stoney Creek MP Chad Collins and Hamilton Mountain MP Lisa Hepfner were elected for the first time.
It took Tassi three years after her first election to be named to a cabinet position. In 2018, she became the minister of seniors, and served in that role until she became minister of labour in November 2019.
The daughter of a steelworker, Tassi was a corporate lawyer for six years and then a high school chaplain for nearly 20 years. She lives in Dundas.
Other Hamilton MPs include Dan Muys, a Conservative elected for the first time in Flamborough-Glanbrook, and Matthew Green, an NDP MP who was reelected for a second term.
Burlington MP Karina Gould gets boost from local young people after entering Liberal leadership race
A day after entering the Liberal leadership race, Burlington, Ont., MP and government House leader Karina Gould was cheered at a campaign launch party by local residents — including young people expressing hope the 37-year-old politician will represent their voices.
Two years after Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly declared she was taking the unprecedented step of moving to confiscate millions of dollars from a sanctioned Russian oligarch with assets in Canada, the government has not actually begun the court process to forfeit the money, let alone to hand it over to Ukrainian reconstruction — and it may never happen.
