Gullak Season 3 Review: In a world of wannabe Mirzapurs, be a Gullak. With naye kisse
India Today
Gullak Season 3 returns with its relatable tale of an Indian middle-class family. The SonyLiv series, premiering today (April 7), stars Geetanjali Kulkarni, Jameel Khan, Harsh Mayar and Vaibhav Raj Gupta.
Gullak Season 3 is here to tickle your funny bone and get you all nostalgic with its funny, emotional and heartwarming moments. In the mini-series, the story of the Mishra family is narrated by a gullak. No, no. Not to be confused with a piggybank. As the gullak (voice of Shivankit Parihar) says, "Woh plastic se banta hai aur main mitti se. Usi mitti se kisse uthata hoon aur aapko sunaata hoon."
After two seasons, as a viewer, one might wonder, what more can the makers have in store? But, an Indian middle-class household has innumerable anecdotes, called kisse in the TVF series, magical enough to keep people hooked. And that is where the writer, Durgesh Singh, derives inspiration from, for the third season.
Gullak Season 3 picks up from where it was left in the previous one. After Aman Mishra (Harsh Mayar), the youngest Mishra, tops his board exams, the family is worried about his Class 11 admissions. And their biggest concern, like any normal middle-class family, is money. Thankfully, Annu Mishra (Vaibhav Raj Gupta), who failed his exam in the first season and was seen buttering a local politician to get a gas agency in the second, has finally secured a job. So, now, being the second earning member of the Mishra family, along with Shanti Mishra's tehri and sarcasm, he is also served respect, something that is of great value in a middle-class household.
The new season will see Annu literally stepping into his father's chappals. No, not giving away spoilers here. Some things have changed, while some things are constant in the Mishra Parivar. Their constant disagreements and bickering continue over trivial matters. Papa Mishra continues to snort 'imaandaari ki charas', as his kids say, but this time it proves hazardous for him, as he gets suspended from his job. While Mummy Mishra has become more vocal about her likes and dislikes, her sarcastic remarks remain on point. Aman, the quirky 17-year-old, will leave you in splits with his retorts. Someone else who has not changed in the new season is Bittu ki Mummy (Sunita Rajwar). The nosy neighbour might be a bane for the Mishras, but she is an added attraction to Gullak.
Directed by Palash Vaswani and created by Shreyansh Pandey, the five-episode series has moments that will touch viewers' hearts. The USP of Gullak is the camaraderie between Geetanjali Kulkarni, Jameel Khan, Harsh Mayar and Vaibhav Raj Gupta and its relatable content. You will hardly find anyone who wouldn't relate to Gullak's kisse, be it the satyanaryan vrat katha, a neighbour tagging along for dinner or sharing the AC room during summers.
The realistic storytelling with relatable characters continues to win hearts even in the third season, which is something that the TVF team is known for. A series might be interesting, but if the characters aren't real, the story isn't effective. Shot in Bhopal, the sets are the same with the same bedroom, kitchen and aangan. However, this time, in comparison to the previous two seasons, the show had fewer fun moments. But, then even life is not always full of happy moments, right? And, these two years of the pandemic have taught us that.
