The ministry said there has been an increase in demand since August this year, which "is a positive sign and indicates that the economy is growing"
Expressing satisfaction over the growing electricity demand, despite shortage of coal, the Power Ministry on Tuesday said that 124 billion units of electricity was consumed in August 2021, which was around 20 per cent more than 106 billion units consumed in August 2019 – that was a pre-pandemic period.
The ministry said that there has been an increase in demand since August this year, which “is a positive sign and indicates that the economy is growing”.
It said that the demand on October 4, 2021 was 1,74,000 mw, which was 15,000 mw more than the corresponding day of last year, i.e. October 4, 2020.
The ministry said that demand is also on the rise because more than 28 million households had received electricity connections under its SAUBHAGYA or Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, and now they were purchasing electric appliances like fans, coolers, air conditioners and television sets.
