A 27-year-old Grimsby woman has been charged with manslaughter, Niagara police say, after someone died from a drug overdose.
Niagara police say a woman, also 27, was found dead in a home as a result of an apparent drug overdose on Nov. 26, 2022.
Niagara police said its opioid enforcement and education unit led the investigation but the police service's homicide unit and criminal investigation branch also worked on the case.
"The female's death was attributed to protonitazene toxicity. Protonitazene is a synthetic opioid significantly stronger than fentanyl," read a media release from police.
On Monday, the accused from Grimsby was arrested and charged with drug trafficking and manslaughter.
The accused is in custody pending a bail hearing on Tuesday at the Robert S.K. Welch courthouse in St. Catharines, police say.
Niagara region has seen 376 opioid-related deaths from 2020 to June 2022, according to the region's public health dashboard.
