Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has urged the State government to close all meat stalls at Shravanabelagola in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan, a popular Jain pilgrimage centre, and uphold the philosophy of non-violence propagated by the Jain religion.
The Governor, who participated in the Mahaveera Jayanti programme at Shravanabelagola on Thursday, said that the Jain Mutt of Shravanabelagola had demanded that the mutton stalls be closed in the temple town. “I urge the State government to ensure it. I wish the legislator and D. Sudhakar, the Minister, also made efforts in this regard,” the Governor said.
Mr. Gehlot said that he had been influenced by the Sanatana Dharma and Jain philosophy. He would serve only vegetarian food to the guests at Raj Bhavan. “I have converted Raj Bhavan into a vegetarian place. Even if the guests are foreigners, we serve only vegetarian food.”
Abhinava Charukeethy Bhattaraka Swamy of Jain Mutt, Minister for Statistics D. Sudhakar, MLA C.N. Balakrishna, former MLC M.A. Gopalaswamy, and others were present.
