After staving off a split, the Goa Congress has filed petitions with the Speaker to disqualify MLAs Michael Lobo and Digambar Kamat for trying to engineer defections.
The Congress on Monday filed petitions with the Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar seeking disqualification of its MLAs Michael Lobo and Digambar Kamat for trying to engineer a split in the party. This comes after 5 of its MLAs, who went incommunicado, attended the Assembly session.
On Sunday, out of the total 11 Congress MLAs in the state, five -- Michael Lobo, Digambar Kamat, Kedar Naik, Rajesh Faldesai and Delialah Lobo -- had gone incommunicado, fueling buzz about defection.
The Congress, which denied all such reports, eventually removed Lobo from the post of Leader of Opposition in the 40-member state Assembly. Here are the top developments.

1) On Monday, Goa Congress chief Amit Patkar said disqualification petitions have been filed against Lobo and Kamat for trying to engineer a defection.
2) Meanwhile, 5 MLAs, who went incommunicado, attended the Assembly session and claimed nothing is wrong.
“There is nothing wrong. All Congress MLAs were together. We went to South Goa for a meeting on Sunday. They [Congress leaders] again wanted to have another press conference which was not required, so we did not attend it,” Michael Lobo told PTI.
