A section of Sri Lankan fans were sporting Australia's yellow jerseys as they sent special messages to Aaron Finch's men during the 5th ODI in Colombo. The visiting Australian team got a rousing reception from the crowd after the ODI series.
Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell thanked the cricket fans in Sri Lanka for their support during the limited-overs series against the island nation after thousands of supporters flocked the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo for the 5th ODI on Friday, June 24.
A sea of fans turned Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium yellow as quite a few of them were sporting the Australian yellow jerseys and waving the Australian national flag during the 5th ODI, thanking the visitors for their trip to the island nation.
The Australian team got a standing ovation from the Colombo crowd after they sealed a consolation win in the final ODI after conceding the series to Sri Lanka. It was a terrific moment as the packed R Premadasa Stadium was on its feet cheering Aaron Finch and his men. There were special messages in special banners for the Australian cricket team as the crowd appreciated the hard-fought cricket in the limited-overs series.
Sri Lanka is in the midst of its worst financial crisis since independence in 1948, forcing the island nation's population to endure power cuts, shortages and months of sometimes violent protests. However, a section of cricket fans in the country came out to support the home team throughout the 8 matches as the venues had an electric atmosphere.
Notably, the Sri Lankan cricket fans donned the Australian yellow and were seen carrying the Australian national flag after a social media campaign urged them to pay tribute to the visitors, according to news agency Reuters.
