Doha: Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) launched its 20th anniversary celebrations by proudly welcoming 132 students in the Class of 2028 at the 2024 Convocation.
This historic event welcomed the largest number of Qatari students ever admitted and honoured two decades of partnership with Qatar Foundation and enduring contributions to Qatar’s educational landscape—a milestone to be marked throughout the year with various events and activities.
Convocation at Georgetown is a profound rite of passage, connecting new students to a legacy of academic excellence and global engagement. This ceremony ushers in a new beginning for each student and welcomes them into a diverse, inclusive community where every individual is valued and shares a commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
Joseph Hernandez, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Strategic Enrollment Management, highlighted the importance of this milestone. “This year’s class diversity reflects our growing global reputation. Foreign Policy Magazine recently recognised the Georgetown curriculum as the best for careers in international relations and foreign policy. Our unique location as part of Qatar Foundation’s exceptional ecosystem allows us to attract talented students interested in tackling global challenges and engaging in our world-class curriculum right here in Qatar.”
Among this exceptional cohort are two students from Gaza and one from the West Bank, recruited through the Second Chance initiative. This programme supports high-achieving, low-income international students, including refugees, who seek access to higher education but lack financial aid. GU-Q’s collaboration with Second Chance underscores its unwavering commitment to access and equity in the face of global challenges.
