Fuel spill in Thames River prompts cleanup and monitoring

Environmental cleanup crews will be working this weekend to ensure a diesel fuel spill caused by a vehicle crash does as little damage as possible to the Thames River.
The fuel tank in a City of London garbage truck ruptured following a crash with another vehicle Friday morning on Wonderland Road South, north of Springbank Drive. A city spokesperson said it caused a spill on the roadway and into a nearby storm sewer outlet in the river.
"In our response, it was found that an undetermined amount of diesel fuel had entered the storm sewer outlet and the river," wrote spokesperson Andrew Sercombe in an email sent to media outlets hours after the incident.
He said city staff, including the fire department, were called to contain the spill, and that the Ministry of the Environment's field crews have since been out to evaluate the site.
"Crews have made good progress to contain and mitigate the spill using absorbent booms and vacuum truck services," Sercombe said Friday afternoon. "Work will continue this evening and the area will be monitored over the weekend."
People walking along the river near Springbank and Wonderland, or living nearby, may notice the smell of diesel fuel. The city is encouraging people to report it through the Service London portal online at service.london.ca.
