West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lashed out at the central government over the recent hike in fuel prices. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief even drew parallels between fuel prices in India and the economic crisis unfolding in Sri Lanka.
Speaking during a meeting at the state secretariat on Thursday, Mamata Banerjee said fuel prices have been hiked by Rs 10 per litre over the last 17 days. This has led to an increase in the prices of consumer goods, she added.
"Just after elections in four states, this [fuel price hike] is the return gift by Modi government," Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday.

She added, "Centre is doing nothing to stop the price hike. Centre should invest time in searching for illegal stocks in the market instead of using agencies like the ED and CBI."
Announcing measures aimed at tackling the hike in prices of consumer goods, Mamata Banerjee announced that the West Bengal government will sell fruits and vegetables at subsidized rates through its 332 'Sufal Bangla' retail outlets.
"We will sell potato, onion and other vegetables and for our minority brothers as Roza is going on, we will sell dates and bananas at a subsided rate through Sufal Bangla," she said.
