The letter 'Z' has become a symbol of support to Russia which has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The idea behind this symbol is now being compared to the Swastika, a symbol of Hitler's Nazi Germany. Like 'Z' and Swastika, here are some other symbols that gained prominence during war.
From a letter to a military symbol to a sign of support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine -- "Z [has become] the new sign of war. It's the new Swastika."
Swastika, believed to be a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indic religions, is now recognised as the symbol of Hitler's Nazi Germany. Well, it was in 1930s. Today, in 2022, the chorus has mounted over the letter 'Z' which is used by Russia as its military symbol amid its war against Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24. With an aim to "demilitarise and denazify" Ukraine, Russian forces marched forward to capture Ukrainian cities.
Within moments, hundreds of Russian tanks were seen on Ukrainian streets. As heart-wrenching images and videos from the war-torn country started going viral, netizens took no time to notice the symbol 'Z' on these tanks.
As a letter, Z does not exist in the Cyrillic Russian alphabet. However, a letter resembling figure 3 represents the "z" sound, a report said.
In no time, 'Z' became the current war symbol. While some wore T-shirts with 'Z' printed on it to show their support to Russia, those who backed the war-hit Ukraine, used the Ukrainian flag to show their support.
Meanwhile, several analysts came up with theories to decode the use of 'Z' by Russians.
