From sansad to sadak, Congress protests over hike in fuel prices
India Today
On Wednesday, the Congress held protests over the recent hike in fuel prices. While the Congress MPs protested near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament House, the party’s youth wing staged a demonstration near the petroleum ministry in Delhi.
Congress MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha protested near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament House, demanding a discussion on fuel price hike. The members of the Indian Youth Congress also staged demonstrations over the hike in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders by the central government.
Claiming that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has already predicted this fuel price hike, Leader of Opposition Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Rahul Gandhi had already said that this Modi government will increase the prices of diesel, petrol, and gas after the elections in five states. Then these people joked, but now it is becoming true that they themselves have increased the price of petrol, diesel, gas, kerosene. We are protesting against this government’s plot to rob Rs 10,000 crore.”
Mallikarjun Kharge further added, “Rahul Gandhi had already expressed his doubts that the price would increase, that turned out to be correct. This is becoming a financial burden on the common people. The entire market is on fire, with the price of everything has increased this will be equal to adding ghee to the fire. And after this hike, the fire (in market) will increase, and inflation will also increase.”
Congress MPs stormed the well of both houses on Wednesday, shouting slogans and holding placards demanding a discussion on the issue. This lead to adjournment of both houses till 12 noon.
Stating that they will continue to protest, Congress MP Amiben Yagnik said, “Fuel hike has reached a height but government doesn’t understand the pain of the common people. It may say all untruth stuff - that they are doing good governance, but it is utter failure of governance. Every household is pained to buy petrol, gas and diesel at these hikes prices they talk about rashtravad but in reality this is what they are doing for the people of this country.”
Speaking to India Today, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi dismissed claims that the hike happened due to ongoing Russia- Ukraine conflict.
“For so long we knew the conflict in Ukraine is going on but the BJP government didn’t raise the prices, but why now ? If the government manage the price of petrol, diesel, gas for last two0three months, what has prompted now? This is the ploy of the government to put more pressure, more burden on the poor and that’s why Congress party is speaking up.”
