
France's Macron warns against escalation after Biden says Putin 'cannot remain in power'

French President Emmanuel Macron said he wouldn't use the same type of wording President Biden used to describe Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "butcher" who "cannot remain in power," saying his goal was to negotiate a ceasefire and then withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

His main goal remained "achieving first a ceasefire" and then a "total withdrawal" of Russian troops from Ukraine through "diplomatic means," Macron told broadcasters Sunday. "If this is what we want to do, we should not escalate things -- neither with words nor actions."
