Fort Macleod emergency room closes for the day due to sudden staff shortage
CBC
The emergency room at the Fort Macleod Health Centre closed Friday due to a staffing shortage and is set to remain closed until 5 p.m., according to Alberta Health Services.
The closure is due to a "clinical personnel shortage and an inability to secure temporary coverage," AHS said in a news release.
All other services at the health centre will continue normally.
Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency while the emergence room is closed.
"EMS will remain available to the community and will be re-routed to surrounding facilities, including the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge," AHS said.
Non-emergency health concerns can be addressed by calling Health Link at 811.
"Depending on their needs, patients may also be able to access some services through local pharmacies," AHS said.
AHS says it is continuing to try to find the clinical personnel needed to open the emergency room and, if coverage is found, it will be reopened before 5 p.m.
"This is a temporary measure, and AHS is working hard to ensure residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time," it said in the release.
Fort Macleod is about 175 kilometres south of Calgary.
