In a departure from tradition, former US presidents will not be invited to attend the funeral of the Queen. Instead, the honor will be extended only to current heads of state, and their spouses or partners, American-based news website The Daily Beast reported.
The White House announced on Sunday that US President Biden had accepted an invitation to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. But the invitation “was for the president and the first lady only,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Monday, according to the American-based newspaper USA Today.
Presidents, prime ministers, and kings and queens from all over the world are expected to attend Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral on September 19 in Westminster Abbey. This is the same church where Queen Elizabeth's official coronation took place in 1953, USA Today reported.
Former US President Donald Trump called the late Queen Elizabeth a "great woman" who never made mistakes following the death of Britain's 96-year-old monarch.
"Who could be greater than what she's done? And she did it so long, so well and never made mistakes," Trump said on GB News, according to Reuters.
The state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will take place on Monday, September 19, at Westminster Abbey in London.
