Wendi Campbell, the former CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, has died. She was 53.
Campbell died Monday after a long battle with cancer. Campbell had been open with her diagnosis of a golf-ball sized tumour in her brain, which was discovered in 2022. She went to see her doctor after she started to experience twitches from her feet to her neck and they would last several seconds.
A CT scan revealed the tumour and doctors said it was aggressive. She had it removed a week later.
But Campbell did not return to work at the food bank and in December 2023, it was announced she was not going to return from her medical leave.
In an obituary posted online by her family, it said she "moved on to her next great adventure" while her husband and two children were by her side.
"On Monday, January 15, we experienced the loss of our favourite person, Wendi," the obituary said.
"In her final wishes, she continued to give to others, donating her brain to the Sheila Singh Lab at McMaster in Hamilton to support advances in Glioblastoma research."
Campbell has been the CEO of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region for more than 15 years.
"Wendi's vision to make our community a better place was central to everything she did," the obituary said about her time working for the food bank.
"We have an immense gratitude for every moment Wendi gifted us. She accomplished more in her 53 years here than we could ever imagine in our own lives. In her words, she had no regrets."
As news of her death travelled on Thursday, people took to social media to pay tribute to Campbell.
Kitchener councillor Dave Schnider posted about Campbell on X, writing in part: "Our Community has lost one of our brightest lights."
Regional chair Karen Redman wrote on X: "Our community has lost a great leader. Wendi was a fierce advocate and caring community builder. She leaves an impressive legacy of impact."
Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife also shared her condolences on X.
